House Votes to Extend Patriot Act

I wish this were a surprise. The only surprising part came last Tuesday, the 8th, when an attempt to fast track the renewal of the Patriot Act didn’t work. That vote fell just short because 26 tea partiers voted against it. This was encouraging – maybe these freshman congressmen with all their talk of protecting the Constitution weren’t full of it, at least not on this issue. But no worries. The bill’s GOP shepherds sent the Act through the slower procedure (not much slower since the 2nd vote already happened) and apparently those tea partiers saw the Boehner light.

Not that the tea partiers are any worse than the Democrats or their Republican bedfellows. As blogger Chris Slavens points out, the Democrats voted against renewing the Patriot Act this time, but they banded together to vote in favor of it previously. And the Democratic President would like to make the Act permanent. My, how a few years can change a politician’s positions. I guess the only important thing for any politician these days is to oppose the other side, regardless of context or ideology.

This is one time when I hope the conservative bloggers and talking heads hit the warpath, because only those who are genuinely passionate about protecting the Constitution might drive a movement to end the Act.
